The Liechtensteiner Weg is a fascinating hiking trail that guides walkers across the tiny country, with an accompanying app that provides information on the sights you are walking past.
Liechtenstein might be tiny - but it's still 160 square kilometres. It seemed to take us forever to get from Balzers in the south to Vaduz in the middle of the country.
And when we did, we of course had to stop for refreshment before continuing our epic walk, during which we went to the stadia of all seven football stadiums in Liechtenstein.
The big highlight of the trip: the 2023 Liechtenstein Cup final between FC Vaduz and FC Balzers.
Against a stunning backdrop, Balzers initially held their own against the mighty FC Vaduz.
But in the end, the perennial winners proved too strong and racked up a 4-0 victory.
For FC Vaduz, it was their 49th national cup title. Now that number stands at 52 and is a world record.

Liechtenstein, a tiny double-landlocked country sandwiched between Austria and Switzerland, has a curious football scene. It is the only UEFA country without its own league, meaning its seven clubs compete at varying levels of the Swiss football pyramid. Its top club FC Vaduz, who have won the national cup competition 52 times, even play in the Super League (the top flight in Switzerland) at the time of writing.

A relatively easy place to get to from Lee’s base in Vienna, we have been to Liechtenstein on three separate occasions - and they were all equally memorable.

The first time was in May 2022, when Lee, Tom and Simon visited the country and attended a match at the picturesque Sportplatz Rheinau, the home of FC Balzers, who have since gone viral on Instagram after an Argentine influencer called Valen Scarsini tried to transform the fortunes of the club with the world’s smallest fan base.

The second time, a year later, saw Lee travel alone to attend the 2023 Liechtenstein Cup final, only narrowly arriving on time after a mudslide had delayed his train journey from Vienna. Vaduz ran out as winners for the 49th time. The following day, Lee embarked upon a crazy madcap plan to walk to all seven stadia in the country in 24 hours, following the Liechtenstein Weg hiking trail along the Rhine and successfully completing the challenge the next morning.

The third time was in March 2025, when the crew took in a lower-league game in Schaan as part of a groundhopping challenge. The goal? To watch matches in three different countries (in this case Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein) in the space of one day, using only public transport for travel. Amidst pouring rain, we ultimately completed the challenge in the space of seven hours after taking in lower-league matches in all three countries!
